Abdominal Ultrasound

An abdominal ultrasound produces a picture of the organs and other structures in the upper abdomen.

A Doppler ultrasound study may be part of an abdominal ultrasound exam.

Doppler ultrasound is a special ultrasound technique that evaluates blood velocity as it flows through a blood vessel, including the body's major arteries and veins in the abdomen, arms, legs and neck.

Common Uses of an Abdominal Ultrasound

Abdominal ultrasound is used to evaluate the:

• Abdominal aorta and other blood vessels of the abdomen
• Gallbladder
• Kidneys
• Liver
• Pancreas
• Spleen

Ultrasound is used to help diagnose a variety of conditions such as:

• Abdominal pain or distention.
• Abnormal liver function.
• An aneurysm in the aorta.
• Enlarged abdominal organ.
• Stones in the gallbladder or kidney.

Additionally, ultrasound may be used to provide guidance for biopsies.

Doppler Ultrasound

Doppler ultrasound images can help your doctor see and evaluate:

• Blockages to blood flow (such as clots).
• Narrowing of vessels (which may be caused by plaque).
• Tumors and congenital malformation.
